American Romanticism Literature Survey

This course is a survey of American Romanticism in the 19thCentury. This class will introduce students to the works of this time, and allow them to engage with the historical period in which they were written. Students will also discuss their relevance and importance in today's society.

We will read novels by Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne, as well as short fiction from these authors and Edgar Allen Poe.

We will also read poetry from the era, particularly the work of Poe, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickenson, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Classes will be discussion centered, with some lectures and occasional in-class writing assignments.

There will also be three Response Papers of 3-5 pages and a Class Presentation assignment.

This course is worth 1/2 High School English Credit.

There is no prerequisite for this course, though experience in writing essays or long answers would be helpful.
